A good artist can make good singles but make terrible albums, right?
I’ve been fighting with my girlfriend about this for over an hour. She’ll except, prima face, that someone can make good singles, but bad albums, but won’t accept it in practice, and it’s driving me crazy.

Sure, sometimes lightning only strikes so many times.

Oh yeah they can . My older sister (who has great taste in music) really liked the song “Digging Your Scene” by the Blow Monkeys when it came out so she bought the album. The album was so bad that she actually returned it for a refund.

Ummm, are you looking to crowd source your relationship out of existence?
Also, it's Monday.

That’s like asking who is better Lemmy or God?

Trick question. Lemmy is God

Yes

All I know is that Lemmy would smite Honeybunchesofgoats and his girlfriend.

Or maybe a not-great-in-hindsight artist can only make “good” singles and make actually- bad albums. Incubus with A Crow Left of the Murder comes to mind. Or hell, Light Grenades.

I bought Falco Vienna Calling, the entire album. Other than the hit single the rest of the tape was crap. I also did this with Bob Jovi’s hit album New Jersey. I bought it for Bad Medicine and the rest was a disappointment.

One or two great songs doesn’t make for a great artist in my opinion. But for that matter, someone can only be great for so long before the audience becomes cynical or they run out of creativity.

Jeanny came up in this discussion, but not in a positive way.

Sigh. I can’t. Because it means implicitly accepting that Michael Jackson made good albums, and he did not. He made good singles, which he then sold in album format with a lot of shitty songs.

you can still be right, you just gotta let her be wrong and not say anything about it

I would call them a mediocre artist.

It’s very subjective but yes I’d agree a good artist can make terrible albums. Honestly it’s unreasonable to expect any artist to create albums full of songs everyone loves. I think with rare exception there are at least a few stinkers on every album. Fair example I like Metallica but St Anger was absolutely awful. Just tell your gf your internet friends agree

Off the Wall is a great album

You cray.
Thriller is overrated as an album, though.

It’s an AWFUL album. That’s the crux of my argument. Good artist, good singles, never made a good album.

Unfortunately, “artists” thrive off that formula now. The y bank on one or two singles to carry the weight of the rest of the album. The other songs are fillers. Metallica’s late st album is an example. Their two singles were d ecent songs, but the rest of the album is very forgettable. And in the industry of streaming, you no longer have to buy full albums to get their good songs.

The black album was the last good Metallica record. Although I did hear Hardwired on the radio a couple weeks ago and shazamed it cause I was like shit is this Metallica?
